How do I send a message to someone who doesn't have Peerio?

If the person you want to message doesn't have Peerio you can still send them a private message using end-to-end encryption by sending a Peerio Ghost. When sending a Ghost you will be given a passphrase just for that message. Your message and file attachments will be accessible by clicking a link in an email sent to your recipient.

Think of your Ghost as your personal secret messenger. You tell the Ghost a secret and then tell it to meet someone somewhere. You also tell the Ghost to only divulge the secret to the person who knows the secret passphrase.

Now, the internet is like a giant bazaar with lots of activity and possible threats. If you tell your contact the secret passphrase in the same place the Ghost is supposed to meet them (like an email inbox), someone listening in might overhear the secret phrase and intercept the message.

The safest way to ensure only your intended recipient gets the message is to tell them the secret phrase in a different venue. So if your Ghost is meeting them in an email, maybe tell your recipient the secret phrase over SMS, a phone call, or some other private channel.

Ghosts will expire after a maximum of 7 days and are then deleted from Peerio's servers.

Peerio's free plan allows users to send 5 ghosts every month. If you need to send more Ghosts, upgrade to a Peerio Pro Plan.

How to send a Ghost on Peerio for iOS or Android

1. Begin composing a new message as you normally would by tapping the compose message icon  in the top right corner.

2. Enter your friend's email in the "To" field. If this is the first time you're sending a message you will be asked permission to access your contacts. You will see suggestions from your Peerio account as well as emails from your phone's contacts as you type. The Ghost icon indicates that a Ghost will be sent to this contact instead of a regular Peerio message. Peerio will send a Ghost to all recipients if the first email entered is not associated with one of your existing Peerio contacts. When composing a Ghost, Peerio will have a blue background.

3. Compose your message. Attach any photos or videos you'd like to the message. For greater security you must upload these attachments separately from any files already stored in your Peerio storage. Once you're done, tap "Prepare Ghost."

4. Set the number of days you'd like the Ghost to expire after. The message will disappear after the chosen number of days.

5. Note down the passphrase. This passphrase will only be used for this Ghost.

6. Tap the "Send Ghost" button.

7. Your friend(s) will receive an email with a link to view the message and any attachments. They will need the passphrase to be able to login. If you wish to send the link another way you can tap the share icon.  You can use the share button next to the passphrase to send the passphrase.
