What does "user-held keys" mean?

With Peerio, only you hold the private encryption key to your account (your passphrase). This is an important component of any end-to-end encryption tool.

For example, a service may encrypt your data on their servers, but they may still be able to read your data because they have access to your keys. Any service that offers a "password reset" feature is able to access and modify your private key, meaning they are also able to decrypt and access your data.

By ensuring only the user holds their encryption key, Peerio is able to offer a true end-to-end encryption tool in which no third party can decrypt your data, not even us. Only you and your intended recipients can access your private communications — exactly as it should be!
